Chichu Art Museum requires online reservation. Slots fill up quickly, especially on weekends and holidays. Book at least 1-2 weeks ahead for guaranteed entry.
The island is hilly but a bicycle (regular or electric, ~¥500-1,000/day) is the best way to get around. Electric bikes are highly recommended for the hills between Honmura and Benesse area.
Take the first ferry and start with the most popular spots (Chichu, Benesse). Work your way to the Art House Project in Honmura village in the afternoon when it's less crowded.
Most museums are closed on Mondays (or Tuesday if Monday is a holiday). The Art House Project has different hours. Always verify schedules on the Benesse Art Site website before visiting.
Many facilities, restaurants, and shops on Naoshima are cash-only. There are limited ATMs on the island, so withdraw enough yen before taking the ferry.
Some of the best art on Naoshima is free and outdoors — the Yellow Pumpkin, Red Pumpkin at Miyanoura Port, and Naoshima Pavilion. Walk along the coast to discover hidden installations.
Pleasant weather and cherry blossoms make this ideal for island hopping. The Setouchi Triennale (held every 3 years) often has spring sessions with special installations.
